Summary: "Good ol' Arthur Fiedler"

I'd been wanting a collection of marches for many years. When I was a kid, one of the very few tv shows I was allowed to watch was Arthur and the Boston Pops. This is a perfect collection of marches - great to wake up to!

Summary: "A good collection of marches"

This is a good collection of popular marches, and the word "march" is fortunately extended to include more than military marches. Most performances are top-notch. I bought this for the French Military March (from Algerian Suite) and Procession of the Sardar (from Caucasian Sketches), and was pleasantly surprised at the other tracks. I was especially surprised by de Sambre et Meuse, which I knew by another name, Le Regiment.

Summary: "Not enough thunder for me..."

Marches are supposed to be big and brassy, not melodic and dance-like in rhythm. I also didn't hear enough differentiation between the styles of the composers. Berlioz and Verdi were the same as Strauss and Sousa. The overall selection was good, but this isn't the kind of crashing-cymbals, lots of drum and woodwinds march I was looking for. If you're looking for a nice smooth string ensemble, I'd recommend it. Nice background music for your Fourth of July dinner party.
